“Thy Kingdom Come: God’s Rule and Human Weakness”
A lecture by the Rev. Dr. Lissa Wray Beal
Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy Kingdom Come,” and we long for God’s rule of justice and righteousness. This prayer draws on central Old Testament ideas of God’s rule. The Old Testament also tells of human kings—like David—who were good, bad, or somewhere in-between. How do these human kings relate to God’s rule? Why would God allow flawed humans to lead his people? Were any kings truly faithful? How can we think of these kings in relation to the New Testament and our life in Christ today? This lecture will reflect on these questions, providing a helpful companion to our preaching series on King David.
