You've Got a Friend

July 13, 2017 by Janet Earle

Carole King’s album Tapestry came out just before I got to High School. One of the best-selling records of all time, it was one of my very first albums. I listened to it over and over. I can still sing the words to every song. It’s funny how the things that get into your head when you are young seem to stay there forever.

You’ve Got A Friend, was one of the many hit songs on that album. Its lyrics speak of a friend who is present and ready to help in the most difficult times, and faithful through all seasons. Don’t we all long for th…

The Stories Our Windows Tell

June 25, 2017 by Sandra Seaborn

Walking into St. Paul’s for the first time visitors look up and voices hush. A sense of awe pauses people as they take in the beauty and spaciousness. The light filters in through stained glass, flickering abstract coloured patterns on the floors. With a closer look, images reveal themselves in those windows. Figures emerge. Perhaps you have been here fifty times, or five hundred times, and seen the stained glass wondering what stories they tell and who the people are. This summer you can find out. From now until Labour Day we will be preachi…

Rector's Thank You

June 15, 2017 by Barry Parker

What a Sunday we had last week! To celebrate our 175th anniversary, we had an amazing worship service (the first time in memory combining all three Sunday services), a great group photo, a photo booth, testimonials, brisk hospitality CLXXV lager sales, tours and more.

As you can imagine, it takes many people to ensure a day like Anniversary Sunday was such an incredible success. My heartfelt thanks to the dozens of volunteers, leaders and staff who poured themselves into making it happen.

It was also a great privilege to announce our …

175th Anniversary Message From the Archbishop

June 7, 2017 by Archbishop Colin Johnson

A Message from The Most Rev. Colin R. Johnson, Archbishop of Toronto

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

John Macquarrie, a 20th C. Scottish theologian who taught at Oxford, wrote that God is everywhere, not confined to church building. But, he added, without having certain places set apart to acknowledge God’s presence in the midst of the community, then in the popular mind, God ceases to be recognised anywhere.

The celebration of the 175th anniversary of St. Paul’s is a remarkable milestone. The buildings are magnificent bu…

Children's Ministry - Is it Your Turn?

June 1, 2017 by Janet Earle

As most parents will attest, teaching children to wait to take their turn can be a challenge. When our eyes light on something we want, it’s hard to wait to get it. Even as adults, we are happy to have our turn when it comes to the things we want!

I am very thankful for the many people who have ‘taken a turn’ serving in Children’s Ministry. New team members join us regularly, and some leaders have served for many, many years. These volunteers offer themselves in service, and they are the backbone of our Children’s Ministry.…

Doors Open 2017

May 8, 2017 by Admin

Once a year, the City of Toronto invites organizations with buildings of architectural interest to open their doors to the public. On the last weekend in May, people travel all over the city exploring places that are usually private or closed. While the St. Paul’s sanctuary, or “New Church” is open every Sunday, many people have never been inside. This year, we are participating in Doors Open Toronto with the hope that many will come who have never visited before.

Our theme for the weekend is, “From the Titanic to Vimy Ridge,…

The Power of Generosity

May 4, 2017 by Sandra Seaborn

To be generous is to show a readiness to give more of something than is necessary. It’s seen in the person who gives time or money to someone in need, or simply stops to listen to a friend. The neighbour who puts out your recycling bin, or the stranger who pays for those standing in line behind her. Generosity involves showing kindness, looking after those less fortunate, putting others first and giving to God’s ministry.

As Christians, we find our inspiration in Jesus Christ, who showed ultimate generosity when He lived on earth an…

Holy Week & Easter 2017

April 9, 2017 by Barry Parker

Dear Friends;

The paradox of our time in history is that
we spend more, but have less;
we buy more, but enjoy it less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families;
more conveniences, but less time;
more medicine, but less wellness.
We read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
These are the times of tall men, and short character;
steep profits and shallow relationships.
These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce;
of fancier houses, but broken…

Journey to the Cross

April 6, 2017 by Janet Earle

What do a donkey, a bottle of wine, a few nails and a big rock have in common? If you have heard the story of Easter, you likely know the answer. They are all elements in the dramatic events that make up the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. I am guessing you have heard that before.

At St. Paul’s, we are the Christian community for over 225 children and their families. For some, the story of Easter is brand new. We are very excited to have the opportunity to share it with them.

They may not know about the donkey Jesus rode int…

Exciting News!

March 22, 2017 by Barry Parker

Earlier this year we made our annual debt re-payment using the funds collected in our Above and Beyond capital campaign. We now have only $150,000 outstanding on our loan. By the grace of God we believe we will pay off our loan entirely by January 30, 2018.

This is a remarkable achievement. Our massive reconstruction started in 1991 with repairs to the north face (Bloor Street) of the church. Now, some 26 years later, the entire facility has been renovated, adding major new construction to a facility where Jesus’ redeeming love and gra…
